Nanowire gas sensors have many applications in health-care, safety, environmental monitoring etc., yet the major problem that current research faces is a lack of understanding of the reactions that take place between the sensing film and the gas species and hence a substantial lack of selectivity of tindioxide nanowire sensing devices. The book will provide an introduction to nanowire gas sensor modelling and will in particular present a mathematical model for tindioxide nanowire sensors. The surface reactions are described by parameter-dependent ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that give the net exchange of electrons between the gas and the tindioxide nanowire. The net exchange of electrons is then included in the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation for the computation of the electric potential. From the electric potential we obtain the concentrations of holes and electrons via Boltzmann distributions and finally the graded channel approximation returns the current I that can be compared to the measurements. The book provides the reader with an overview about developing a simulation model for gas sensors.

In the developing world, road traffic accidents are a major cause of death and injury. A statistical analysis was conducted of road accidents and casualties in Bangladesh. This was undertaken in order to assist the policy-makers to take appropriate steps to reduce the road accidents and casualties. Data from Bangladesh government publications were explored, analysed and statistically modelled. An exploration was undertaken using average rates. In addition, annual time series data were investigated using trend lines. ANOVA was conducted using the rates applying mainly non-parametric tests. Finally, modelling of two/ three-way data was conducted using the frequencies applying Poisson regression models. The most significant findings from this research were that pedestrians were highly vulnerable. Cities have higher accident rates than non-cities. National highways are the main venues of accidents. Heavy vehicles as bus and truck are predominantly involved. Implications from this research have been considered and suitable recommendations have been made. This book is of interest to transport planners, civil engineers and those undertaking transport researches in the developing world.

This thesis discusses Lévy processes and Lévy copulas. In connection with Lévy processes we treat some of the theory behind infinitely divisible distributions, acknowledging that the two classes are equivalent.Within the class of Lévy processes we will mostly look at stable processes and compound Poisson processes. The theory of Lévy processes dates back to the late 1920 s, after de Finetti first introduced the class of infinitely divisible distributions. Since then Lévy processes have become popular tools for modelling in finance, insurance and physics. Lévy copulas were introduced by Peter Tankov in 2003 in order to model dependency between different components of a multivariate Lévy process. In the last part of the book we present an application of Lévy copulas in non-life insurance and ruin theory of a Lévy copula. Through this example we will discuss aspects regarding estimation of the parameters and goodness of fit.

In the recent decade, methods and models from stochastic geometry and spatial statistics have found widespread applications in analysing and modelling of network structures and have become established alternatives to traditional techniques. This book provides an account of random network techniques. In a first part, random geometric models are introduced. The focus is centred on random tessellations and the study of their asymptotic behaviour. Central limit theorems for a variety of model functionals arederived resulting in asymptotic tests and confidence intervals. Goodness-of-fit is examined through simulation studies and there levance for practical application in network modelling is demonstrated. In a second part, a project is presented that deals with random modelling of telecommunication networks for costevaluation and strategic planning. An innovative model fitting technique, based on the minimisation of distance functions, is introduced. Such functions arise from mean value relations of network characteristics and for several random tessellations of the Poisson family explicit expressions are given. This in turn allows for fast and efficient model fitting.

Multiple Impacts in Dissipative Granular Chains

The extension of collision models for single impacts between two bodies, to the case of multiple impacts (which take place when several collisions occur at the same time in a multibody system) is a challenge in Solid Mechanics, due to the complexity of such phenomena, even in the frictionless case. This monograph aims at presenting the main multiple collision rules proposed in the literature. Such collisions typically occur in granular materials, the simplest of which are made of chains of aligned balls. These chains are used throughout the book to analyze various multiple impact rules which extend the classical Newton (kinematic restitution), Poisson (kinetic restitution) and Darboux-Keller (energetic or kinetic restitution) approaches for impact modelling. The shock dynamics in various types of chains of aligned balls (monodisperse, tapered, decorated, stepped chains) is carefully studied and shown to depend on several parameters: restitution coefficients, contact stiffness ratios, elasticity coefficients (linear or nonlinear force/ indentation relation), and kinetic angles (that depend on the mass ratios). The dissipation and the dispersion of kinetic energy during a multiple impact are mandatory modelling, and are quantified with suitable indices. Particular attention is paid to the ability of the presented laws to correctly predict the wave effects in the chains. Comparisons between many numerical and experimental results are shown, as well as comparisons between four different impact laws in terms of their respective abilities to correctly model dissipation and dispersion of energy.
