The Statistical Analysis of Recurrent Events
115,78 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Recurrent event data arise in diverse fields such as medicine, public health, insurance, social science, economics, manufacturing and reliability. The purpose of this book is to present models and statistical methods for the analysis of recurrent event data. No single comprehensive treatment of these areas currently exists. The authors provide broad but detailed coverage of the major approaches to analysis, while also emphasizing the modeling assumptions that they are based on. Thus, they consider important models such as Poisson and renewal processes, with extensions to incorporate covariates or random effects.More general intensity-based models are also considered, as well as simpler models that focus on rate or mean functions. Parametric, nonparametric and semiparametric methodologies areall covered, with clear descriptions of procedures for estimation, testing and model checking. Important practical topics such as variations in observation schemes or selection of individuals for study, the planning of randomized experiments, events of several types, and the prediction of future events are considered. Methods of modeling and analysis are illustrated through many examples taken from health research and industry. The objectives and interpretations of different analyses are discussed in detail, and issues of robustness are addressed. Statistical analysis of the examples is carried out with S-PLUS software and code is given for some examples. This book is directed at graduate students, researchers, and applied statisticians working in industry, government or academia. Some familiarity with survival analysis is beneficial since survival software is used to carry out many of the analyses considered. This book can be used as a textbook for a graduate course on the analysis of recurrent events or as a reference for a more general course on event history analysis. Problems are given at the end of chapters to reinforce the material presented and to provide additional background or extensions to certain topics.

Statistics for Linguistics with R
26,41 € *

This book is the revised and extended second edition of Statistics for Linguistics with R. The volume is an introduction to statistics for linguists using the open source software R. It is aimed at students and instructors/professors with little or no statistical background and is written in a non-technical and reader-friendly/accessible style. It first introduces in detail the overall logic underlying quantitative studies: exploration, hypothesis formulation and operationalization, and the notion and meaning of significance tests. It then introduces some basics of the software R relevant to statistical data analysis. A chapter on descriptive statistics explains how summary statistics for frequencies, averages, and correlations are generated with R and how they are graphically represented best. A chapter on analytical statistics explains how statistical tests are performed in R on the basis of many different linguistic case studies: For nearly every single example, it is explained what the structure of the test looks like, how hypotheses are formulated, explored, and tested for statistical significance, how the results are graphically represented, and how one would summarize them in a paper/article. A chapter on selected multifactorial methods introduces how more complex research designs can be studied: methods for the study of multifactorial frequency data, correlations, tests for means, and binary response data are discussed and exemplified step-by-step. Also, the exploratory approach of hierarchical cluster analysis is illustrated in detail. The book comes with many exercises, boxes with short think breaks and warnings, recommendations for further study, and answer keys as well as a statistics for linguists newsgroup on the companion website. Just like the first edition, it is aimed at students, faculty, and researchers with little or no statistical background in statistics or the open source programming language R. It avoids mathematical jargon and discusses the logic and structure of quantitative studies and introduces descriptive statistics as well as a range of monofactorial statistical tests for frequencies, distributions, means, dispersions, and correlations. The comprehensive revision includes new small sections on programming topics that facilitate statistical analysis, the addition of a variety of statistical functions readers can apply to their own data, a revision of overview sections on statistical tests and regression modeling, a complete rewrite of the chapter on multifactorial approaches, which now contains sections on linear regression, binary and ordinal logistic regression, multinomial and Poisson regression, and repeated-measures ANOVA, and a new visual tool to identify the right statistical test for a given problem and data set. The amount of code available from the companion website has doubled in size, providing much supplementary material on statistical tests and advanced plotting.

EXTENDED SYMMETRIC POISSON-BOLTZMANN THEORY
49,00 € *

To study the structural and thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solutions the Symmetric Poisson-Boltzmann theory has been extended up to six components and the resulting coupled equations for the mean electrostatic potentials have been solved numerically using a quasi-linearization iterative procedure. The exclusion volume term approximated by PY hard sphere RDF has been calculated using Perram's method along with Verlet and Weis corrections. The RDFs have been computed for four-component systems comprising a single electrolyte with two other neutral components for various cases. Excellent agreement has been found for each case when compared with MC data. The theory predicts the experimental trends when applied to measure the second virial coefficient in a colloidal system of silicotungstate, in a solution of HCl, LiCl or NaCl. The extended theory and the numerical solution techniques can be utilized to study the structural and thermodynamic properties of multicomponent electrolytes which are of great interest because of their frequent presence in industrial processes and in branches of sciences like colloid and surface science, polymer science, biophysics and chemistry.

On Some Aspects of Single Server Queues

This study was concerned with some aspects of single server queues where customers arrive singly to receive some kind of service from a server. We discussed in detail the queueing models for different specifications of arrival and service pattern. The emphasis was given on distribution of queue size, waiting time, sojourn time and busy period.A particular queueing model has also been considered in chapter four. In production process, sometimes it is costly to keep the machine on when there are no jobs to be processed. It has been suggested that it could be reasonable to set up a threshold number of jobs after which the machine may be switched on. We also collected primary data from the out door unit of Urology department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital to get an idea about the queueing pattern formed there and found that the arrival pattern of patients followed Poisson distribution, interarrival time followed exponential distribution and the service time distribution was also exponential. Some important characteristics of queue such as traffic intensity, expected value of queue length, waiting time, sojourn time, busy period etc. were also computed.
